Mono

Mono and I don't mean monotone. Alex has the mono associated with kissing. However, his better not be. Alex started sleeping about three weeks ago....and I mean sleeping a lot. He would sleep 10-12 hour nights and then sleep on the way home from school many times, as well as take a 2 hour nap in between school and basketball. His teacher even started to complain that he was sleeping in class and on field trips....on the floor, in his desk, against walls.....you get the idea.

Last Saturday, February 15 Alex said he didn't feel like himself. Sunday he said the same thing. He said his insides were shaking and he just didn't feel right. By Monday he had a headache, stomach ache, and an awful rash in his armpits and down the sides of his chest. On Tuesday he had a sore throat and body aches and the rash was across his face.  Obviously, he didn't go to school those days.

Wednesday morning he woke up perfectly fine. So, he went to school. He was fine until basketball practice. When I picked him up he looked like death. He felt like death too. He had a fever, the rash was back, his stomach was killing and the body aches were awful. He said his head felt like exploding. He as also physically exhausted.

By morning, I had decided he had mono so I took him to the doctor. Sure enough, his mono test came back positive. His stomach hurts because his spleen is so swollen. He can't exercise for 4 weeks due to the fatigue etc and no contact sports for 3 months due to the swollen spleen. If he gets hit it could explode and then he would have to have surgery and he could die. Other than fluids and rest there is nothing they can do. It should run its course in 4 weeks.....they figure he had it about 2 to 3 weeks.



This is pretty much how you find him now.

This weekend he slept. Except on Saturday he felt great so he wanted to go shotgun shooting. We didn't want him to go, but he begged. We figured this would be a good lesson for him to learn, that what the doctor says is true. He told Alex he may feel good sometimes, but as soon as he does something he will crash. Jay took him for an hour. When he got home he slept for 3.

So Sunday and today he has done nothing. He is so weak. Poor baby. We are shooting for school on Thursday. He will have missed a week and a half. He won't be contagious by then. Knock on wood.
