Family Home Evening: A barrel of fun.

I will admit I am a little, some days a lot, nervous about what is going on in the world. To name just a few, we have had horrible earthquakes in China, flooding in the mid-west, fires in California and now the hurricane in Texas. Our hearts go out to all those affected. We can only imagine what they are going through and will yet go through. I am also a bit concerned over the financial downturn. I think everyone has been affected by it. How could you not, especially if you own a car or anything that takes gas for that matter? We live in unceratin times.

Anyway, I have decided that since I can't fix any of these issues, I can help by driving less and sending support to those in need, but I truly can't make them better, so I have decided I just need to make my own home better. We have always had a night set apart for family home evening (Monday), but I have tried really hard lately to make them better and more impactful (is that even a word?) on my children. This last week we focused on keeping the Sabbath Day holy. I know everyone has things they do on Sunday with their families, but I felt ours were lacking and we needed a bit of help to make it a special day for our family. After Church, we usually go do our own things, but I wanted us to be together more, doing enriching activities. So anyway Monday I bought vanilla ice cream and all the toppings you could think of, plus I pulled out a few of the other condiments that my kids like, like ketchup, mayo, lemon juice etc. I went one by one letting them pick there toppings. After they were done I asked if they wanted their favorite condiment on it too like ketchup. I told Kenzie she eats it on everything why not try in on a Sundae. She said, "Its not good on a Sundae." We went around to each child like this. After they had made their Sundae. We talked to them about how their are a lot of things that are good, but not good to do on Sunday, just like mayo on a sundae might not be so good. I wanted them to see that Sunday needs to be our day as a family to be together, without interruptions from the world. We needed one day to be us. To rest, refocus, regroup, show love and appreciation. My kids put together a list of things they wanted to do on Sundays that would be good for our family. Some suggested reading, others goal setting, another doing letters to far off cousins or family, a walk etc. I think it went well. Here are the pictures of our evening.
*****Also, if you have suggestions that you do as families to unite, strengthen and well, frankly help everyone get along, please suggest. As you can see our list is short.

After the ice cream, we went outside and played. Jay had bought some water barrels for storage and we are giving some to our family and neighbors too. But until they are delivered, we had a great time playing with them. The kids loved stacking them and then they would play "human bowling". They loved knocking the barrels down. Kenzie set us up a relay race. We had two teams...boys vs girls (Austin was the ref) and we had to walk on a barrel (okay I pushed mine), hop over one, run around them and run back to tag our team member. The boys won. I was the reason the girl team lost.

Alex is amazing on the barrels. He didn't even have to practice or struggle with figuring out how to walk on them. He just hopped on and took off. Alex can walk on the barrels around our yard, hop from barrel to barrel and can be facing one way and then flip to face the other way. I don't get how he does it. The rest of us, spend more time trying to figure out how even to stand on them without falling off immediately.

That is really cool, and very deep! You are a philosopher. My parents were always pretty insistent about the Sabbath. To this day, I have in my head that I should not be working on Sunday, so even if yardwork, etc is looming, it's not done on Sunday.

After spending time with Kim B and family the idea of family night really struck a cord with me and it's something that I really want to start doing especially since Maisie is now older. There are books with titles like 1001 things families can do so I would suggest looking at some of those. During the winter it might be fun to have maybe the first Monday of the month as bonfire night and have everyone cook their own hot dogs on stick and make smores for dessert. Can't wait to hear of all the fun things you do as a family.

Great idea with the sundaes. I'll file that away in my brain. Also, where did you get those water barrels? That's on my long list of things to do.
When are you coming for grapes? The birds are feasting!

I hope that you only paid $15/barrel, you definately had a bulk order! We just bought the same barrels, probably from the same man, and our kids did the same thing, as the whole ward's order was waiting in a nearby yard.

Here's the bad news: we need to have a FHE on FILLING THE BARRELS! Our still sit EMPTY in the garage. It's now on the agenda, NEXT Monday night: fill the barrels (and I should also check on the water in our 72 hour kits...and maybe the food, too). Okay, new plan, next FHE is EAT what is in the 72 hour kits, replace what we eat and fill things up with water!

I love your very clever and fun idea. I am sure your children will remember it! I too need to help my family think of ways to be more mindful of what we are doing on the Sabbath. Thanks for the reminder! The barrel photos are AWESOME!

very cool ideas....I wish I would have made more of Sundays when my kids were growing up...we had lots of rules, but not enough guidelines on what we SHOULD do.

Did I just hear that?

Today I was at W*lM*rt and I had the WEIRDEST experience. I can't wait to hear what you all have to say about it. I was at the self check out and the worker that handles those came over to Nini and put her hands on Nini's cheeks and literally put her nose against Nini's nose. Okay....don't know you, plus it is serious cold and flu season. I pulled the cart back quickly. The lady was talking to Nini and asking her how old she was and telling her how cute she is (she is that). Then she said to me, "where did you get her from?" That question threw me. I have been asked where she is from, what nationality she is, but never, "where did you get her from?" I said China, but was thinking, "does she think I got her from a store or something?" This was just the beginning of what was the MOST outrageous conversation I have ever been apart of. She asked me her name. I told her and she said, "Thank you! It makes me so happy to hear that name."...

Maylin's room

Here is an update on painting. The doors continue to be a nightmare. We don''t have doors on the girls bathroom and no doorknobs on any of the other doors. Hopefully next week. I love everything else. Many of you asked about the glaze in the kitchen. It is an oil based glaze that comes in black, white, brown. You roll it on with a small roller and then take it off with a rag, by blotting it. You can make it darker or lighter depending on how much you put on and how much you take off. Here are pictures of Maylin's room. I was scared to make a change with 2 colors, but I think I like it. I don't know if you can tell but on the pink paint it is a wash (first white swirly, then pink) with light white flowers like the top pink ones. I picked words to go around her room that may inspire her. The Chinese translation is underneath. Of course, we used Meng, that was her first name...Meng ni and they called her Nini. The words are in vinyl and the flowers were painted using a pa...

Happily ever after

NieNie Dialogues: April 15, 2019 Christian is the most important person in Stephanie's life. She made this post about him. She wrote about how much she loved him and he loved her. Every year she dedicates a song to him as they enter another year as husband and wife. She said, "Everyday I pray to God, thanking him for Christian. I thank God that he is my husband, my protector, and greatest defender. I thank God that Christian loves and respects me.......And I thank God that I will be with Christian forever and even to infinity and beyond." I am not married, but I related to this post because I love my dad. He is my protector and my provider. He really takes care of our family. He is so great. I can tell my mom loves him too. Even though it embarrasses me, I love to watch my parents hug and kiss. I am glad we are sealed together. After reading this post, I decided I needed to write in my journal characteristics I want in a husband. These are the things I wrote: Must l...
