Monday, Aug. 27 was the first day of school. It was an exciting day. Everyone, but Alex was a bit nervous. Kenzie was worried about her schedule, it had to be changed and she hadn't seen the updated version yet, and seeing friends again and meeting her teacher. She is new to the school and even though we met together during the summer to go over her learning needs, Kenzie was still nervous. Maylin was worried about P.E. and choir. I was worried about what I was going to do all day from now on, without a single kid. I was also worried whether I would be able to hold back the tears as I let me baby go to school.
I did pretty good until I realized I didn't get a shot of all 3 of them together in front of the school like I have every other year. I also realized Austin wouldn't be in them and my baby would be. That started the "My family has changed and is changing" tears.
Alex LOVES his teacher. She is the same 8th grade teacher Kens had. She got cancer last year and didn't have any hair. This year she has a short scuff and was so thrilled to show the kids! Her introduction to class was amazing! Wow. I knew I loved her.
In Kenzie's AP English class the teacher (her core teacher for 4 classes) did a fun egg drop. They had to protect they egg using items she provided in a time limit and then they had to write about it. It was clever. Kenzie's group's egg got a slight crack the first fall and then was pretty much destroyed on the second attempt.
At the end of the day, we practiced carpool. Maylin got her carseat, her backpack from class and walked all around the building to the junior and high school side where our car was waiting. She did terrific. I drive in the mornings and another lady usually drives int he afternoon so we went over the fact that from now on, she needed to look for the other lady's car. I think she can do it. She was pretty happy with her day. Her are a couple of fun comments about her day:
1- When finding her seat was between two boys she said, "Mom I am boy trapped."
2- When it was lunch time she said, "I thought you were joking about me going to school all day. But I guess it is real.
3 -Maylin tried really hard to stay awake on the car ride home, but she couldn't make it. She finally said, "Mom is it okay if I rest my eyes?" I had barely said yes, and she was out cold. So cute.
Alex just said his teacher is amazing. Kenzie said it was good to be back, but her core teacher is crazy homework wise. I am sure she will adjust. They are all AP classes.
As for me, I cried a bit watching Maylin sit at her desk. The next day, I cried a bit when I dropped them off and left. That next day, I spent a couple hours at the gym, cleaned out some cupboards, organized past school projects into individual boxes and made zucchini bread. It went by pretty quickly. I think I will get used to it.

At least I got two of them together! Aren't they cute?
Her desk....with a look of "what am I doing here?"
Jay and I both went to the school and took the kids to their first class. We stayed with Maylin and went to her flag raising/cannon shooting ceremony. She was so worried about the cannon. She remembered from other years and she had her ears plugged from the moment the principle started to just seconds after the Star Spangled Banner.....just at the moment they lit the cannon. She jumped about 5 feet. It was pretty sad. You can see from the pictures, Maylin is a bit nervous.
We then waited for Kenzie and Alex's age groups (7-12 grades) to come out for their ceremony. Alex was pretty casual and Kenzie seemed happy to be back with friends. Jay left after and I spent the day in Maylin's class, per her request. We had lunch together too. It was good as I realized she couldn't open the applesauce....so I have had to rethink that lunch item. I didn't go to her science class or recess. I wanted her to have time on her own, so I went to Alex's class and Kenzie's too.

One of many photos with the face of concern/worry....

Who is that teen-aged red-head in your photos? I would say Kenzie, but WHEN DID SHE GET SO GROWN UP???
Maylin and Alex, too.
They all look great, just way too old :)

Also, sorry about Alex's stress fracture, hope that he's doing better and healing well.
