First grade jitters, a stress fracture and Rock Center on Mormons

Today was meet the teacher day at school. Maylin was super excited to see her teacher. She loves her. When we were sealed to Maylin in our LDS Temple 6 months after we brought her home, a first grade teacher at my kids' school worked at the temple. She saw we were coming in to be sealed and switched her schedule so she could be working that day in the nursery. In the nursery they help the kids get ready in white and they take them up to the sealing room to be with their parents. The kids were thrilled to have someone they know help them and ever since then, Mrs McNamara has taken a great liking to Maylin. They have been friends from that time on. So Maylin was thrilled to have her as a teacher. I think we both (me and Mrs. McNamara) requested each other for school!

Maylin was thrilled to be in her class today. She picked out her desk. It is on the front row next to a little boy James. He is about a head and a half shorter than Maylin. He was cute and they talked for a nano second. In her class she measured her feet and her hands and how tall she was so they could monitor her growth throughout the year. She also saw her cubby.

I did find a couple of things interesting: first, when we walked into the school Maylin wanted to be carried. In her classroom she did okay, but I didn't. I thought I was ready for her to go to school all day, but I actually shed tears while she was in her class. Big tears. Second: She is very nervous about PE. She was fine with her art class, her science class and her choir class, but she was VERY nervous about her PE class. The teacher even picked up on it. Maylin has known this teacher, Ms. Patch for years, but she is nervous about the whole game/tag/exercise thing. Who knew? She wanted to either be held or hold my hand the whole time we were looking around at school. I will go to the first day with her, per her request. I just hope she settles down and is okay with it all.

Here is Alex with my dad. Alex has grown into a size 13 shoe. Nice. Hopefully we don't get any bigger! Also, while running for a touch down during a football game, Alex crumbled. His hip just gave out.....he only could go 20 yards and then the touch down dream came to an end. I took him to the doctor and he has a stress fracture in the growth plate of his hip. It just happens to kids between 9 and 18. It is when they grow faster than what their bones can handle. He is out of football and running, jumping, biking.....anything but light walking for 2 to 4 weeks. He is bummed. It has been a week. He is still limping, but he says it doesn't hurt as bad.

Here is a cute picture of my baby...just for fun!

Also, watched Rock Center with Brian Williams tonight. Just a few comments: over all it was okay. There were a few things I think were a bit misleading or inappropriate, but I guess I didn't expect perfection. Overall, it actually was better than I thought it would be. I felt bad when they kept saying we are a secretive religion. We really aren't. We just have a fear to say too much because when info gets out there and something is different than what the world views as normal, it is usually made fun of or distorted, so we stay quiet to protect the gospel we love so much. Also, because we view many things to be sacred and special, we don't like to talk about them so they can stay special.

First, I really wish they had interviewed more families that were main stream Mormon rather than just the one family.....the Jacksons and the owner of JetBlue. The Jacksons go to my kids' school by the way. I felt like the others  they interviewed were exceptions to the rule. Basically, they were people who had left the church for one reason or another. I am glad they interviewed them of course! Their opinions were needed, but more mainstream people would have been truer to the religion. At least in my opinion.

Second, it seemed to me the show implied Joseph Smith started our religion after seeing the Angel Moroni. I could have heard wrong, but if not, let me clarify. Joseph Smith started the religion after seeing a vision of God the Father and His son Jesus Christ. After that, the Angel Moroni appeared and gave him direction to the plates that were translated into the Book of Mormon.

Third: Showing the garments on TV was very offensive to me. I would never ask Brian Williams to let me see his underwear. They are private no matter what kind of underwear you wear. It is not that I am ashamed of them or want to hide my garments, but they are sacred to me. I wear my garments always. Only to swim, exercise and intimate moments do they come off. They are a reminder to me of the promises I have made to my Heavenly Father to be good, virtuous, faithful, kind, and charitable. They help me choose the right because the are on my person every moment and are an awesome reminder of the Savior and of the person I want to be. I consider them to be very special and sacred. I don't put them on my floor when I change them. They are too sacred to be dropped there. I do not alter them to fit my clothes. My clothes are changed to fit them. That made me sad to have them on display. I guess if the world sees that they aren't weird or secret or anything, but plain, white underwear then okay, but to me it was putting my sacred items on public view. Couldn't they be left sacred?

There were a few other things I disagreed with, but this is all I will cover here, but overall it was good. Just to clarify, yes our storehouses take care of our own, but the storehouses also send out millions and millions and millions of dollars worth of aid each year to those not of our faith. They really didn't say that clearly.

Anyway, that is enough. Overall it was great. I could see in the young man who was in the Book of Mormon musical, that he loved his mission even though he isn't a member now. You could see how he was emotional when he spoke of the memories fondly.

If you want to comment or ask questions please do.

Your comments on the Rock Center show were great! mirrored some of my own feelings. So good to read about the experiences of the kids on the first day of school.

Did I just hear that?

Today I was at W*lM*rt and I had the WEIRDEST experience. I can't wait to hear what you all have to say about it. I was at the self check out and the worker that handles those came over to Nini and put her hands on Nini's cheeks and literally put her nose against Nini's nose. Okay....don't know you, plus it is serious cold and flu season. I pulled the cart back quickly. The lady was talking to Nini and asking her how old she was and telling her how cute she is (she is that). Then she said to me, "where did you get her from?" That question threw me. I have been asked where she is from, what nationality she is, but never, "where did you get her from?" I said China, but was thinking, "does she think I got her from a store or something?" This was just the beginning of what was the MOST outrageous conversation I have ever been apart of. She asked me her name. I told her and she said, "Thank you! It makes me so happy to hear that name."...

Maylin's room

Here is an update on painting. The doors continue to be a nightmare. We don''t have doors on the girls bathroom and no doorknobs on any of the other doors. Hopefully next week. I love everything else. Many of you asked about the glaze in the kitchen. It is an oil based glaze that comes in black, white, brown. You roll it on with a small roller and then take it off with a rag, by blotting it. You can make it darker or lighter depending on how much you put on and how much you take off. Here are pictures of Maylin's room. I was scared to make a change with 2 colors, but I think I like it. I don't know if you can tell but on the pink paint it is a wash (first white swirly, then pink) with light white flowers like the top pink ones. I picked words to go around her room that may inspire her. The Chinese translation is underneath. Of course, we used Meng, that was her first name...Meng ni and they called her Nini. The words are in vinyl and the flowers were painted using a pa...

Happily ever after

NieNie Dialogues: April 15, 2019 Christian is the most important person in Stephanie's life. She made this post about him. She wrote about how much she loved him and he loved her. Every year she dedicates a song to him as they enter another year as husband and wife. She said, "Everyday I pray to God, thanking him for Christian. I thank God that he is my husband, my protector, and greatest defender. I thank God that Christian loves and respects me.......And I thank God that I will be with Christian forever and even to infinity and beyond." I am not married, but I related to this post because I love my dad. He is my protector and my provider. He really takes care of our family. He is so great. I can tell my mom loves him too. Even though it embarrasses me, I love to watch my parents hug and kiss. I am glad we are sealed together. After reading this post, I decided I needed to write in my journal characteristics I want in a husband. These are the things I wrote: Must l...
