Austin was scheduled to have surgery February 19 to replace his defibrillator. However, he got sick and they had to postpone it to make sure his lungs were good. We were getting a little nervous as his battery was pretty close to being dead. Luckily, after a chest x-ray and a complete exam, they were able to reschedule for February 24. This was perfect. It was enough time to have him be healthy, yet soon enough we weren't falling off the edge of the battery cliff.
McKenzie and Alex were horribly sick. Coughs, sore throats, body aches, ear aches etc for weeks. We did our best to keep Austin away from them. I was just in a constant panic every day wondering if he would get sick. I was so relieved when we got to the hospital and he was good to go.
Austin wasn't worried about the surgery itself, just getting an IV. He was pretty worked up about it so the doctor promised him they wouldn't do the IV until he was asleep. Austin reported later that he fought them when he started to go under and was thrashing around. He knew he IV was coming once he went under. Finally, the got him to take deep enough breaths that he relaxed. Funny, how medicine can make our emotions come out in our actions.
The surgery lasted about 1 hour and 45 minutes. They were able to replace the unit and they said they would send him his old unit in the mail as a souvenir. He struggled with nausea, but was able to go home that same day. He has bee struggling with pain all week. Yesterday and today were good days, so hopefully we are on the upswing. He has limited use of his arm as his arm muscle was cut, getting the defibrillatr in. He is wearing a sling. He is still tired naps everyday. But, we are on the mend.
Thanks to all for prayers. Thanks to all for letting me slack in my duties this week. I have been completely focused on him. We appreciate you all.
