All of my children are different. I love them for their individual qualities. Austin is meek and studious. McKenzie has a tender heart. Maylin has an incredible need to show love. Alex is my creative creature. When I saw the above quote, "creativity is a drug I cannot live without," I actually had an epiphany. I realized that is what it must be like to be Alex. The other kids I get. I have a bit of me in them. Alex, however, is very different than me. Yes, we have similarities, but his brain works in a way that I can't get and sometimes makes me tired. But seeing this quote, helped me understand. He just has to be creative.
He is my child that will try anything. He is the child that always has to be discovering, exploring, learning, laughing, moving........
He isn't satisfied with reading about something or seeing it. No, he has to do it. It does sometimes get him in trouble.....yes the school called today and he got a warning. Nothing horrible, but something I would expect from him. Sometimes the little rules get in the way of enjoying life completely. I couldn't be too mad when the school called because the day before, right when he got home he confessed to me what he did. He wanted me to know that he hadn't made the best decision and he recognized it. The principle was really impressed I knew. I am glad that he talks to me and knows when he doesn't make the best choice.
**NOTE - he hasn't made any bad choices, just not the best choices. There is a difference.
Most of his choices are made based on what he wants to learn or create. Sometimes I can hear him running around on the roof. When he comes in he will have his camera and he will tell me he just had to get a picture of the moon. He has even positioned his camera on the roof so it can take pictures all night long so he can make movies of the stars and sunrise. (Here are some of his photos)

We have come home many a night and to sparks and fire shooting around in our backyard. He was recreating experiments he had seen on you-tube. He spends hours in "his art studio" - our garage - painting. Good thing we didn't get a lot of snow, we haven't been able to put our cars in the garage all winter. He is constantly making things. He even made an amazing Frozen snow globe. Tonight he is in the living room making a photo booth thingy...... I don't know what it is, but I need to by him white, heavy fabric for it, so he tells me.
Picture of one of his experiments. That is a rope tied to my whisk (may it rest in peace) and then filled with steel wool....and lit on fire. You can swing the rope to make different designs with the sparks.....

Whenever I am at the store he texts me lists of supplies he needs for his new projects. I can only imagine what I will come home and find.
He has recently taught himself photography. Dang. He is good at it too. I've been trying to learn for years and in weeks he knows way more than I do. He sleeps when he is not creating. I think it is because he is so busy creating and thinking and playing that he has to sleep.
Here are some recent photos he took.
He had Jay drive up and down the street for over 30 minutes until he had learned how to do the shutter speeds etc. needed to make this happen with the light from his headlights.

I love his mind and I try to be patient. I want to foster this creative zeal. Sometimes there is a lot of clean up, but it is worth it watching him smile when something really comes together. Besides, he is getting better at cleaning up after himself.
