Chicks by post

Several weeks ago I bought 11 Cornish game hens and 15 baby chicks. They weren't scheduled to be born until Sept 27. They would be delivered to us sometime after that. Well, this morning the post office called and said our chirpy little package had arrived and was waiting for us to pick it up. It was so fun to go to the post office and collect our package! Seriously, the post office will deliver most anything!!!

The chicks are all doing great....except for one that died in transit. Just for your info, when the game hens get to be 2 to 2 1/2 pounds we will take the necessary steps to make them available for our freezer. The other ones will begin to lay eggs in about 5 to 6 months. In that same time period, some of our current chickens will stop laying due to old age (that being 3) and so we won't have 30 chickens laying. We will probably only have 25. As my mom would say, "ONLY??"

Also, this week while at Wal-Mart, Maylin wanted me to ask the checkout girl if she was from China. She was Oriental, but I didn't know if she was Chinese or Japanese or Korean. Because I didn't know, she wanted me to ask the girl. I wouldn't because I don't like it when people ask Maylin what she is. Maylin kept telling me that she had to be Chinese. She said, "She looks like she is from China and her voice is like Chinese too." I guess that means Maylin could hear her accent...she did have a strong one. It was an interesting moment. I am sure the girl could tell we were talking about her. I just wasn't sure how to handle it.

Chickens? Where are they? I don't remember any loud squawking noises when I was at your house! Man, you're amazing. I'm completely overwhelmed by just one new puppy. And he's not even edible. That would just be sad.

BTW, I sometimes will ask someone, "What is your ethnic background?" It seems like a friendly conversation starter and non-threatening. It doesn't assume the person is "from" somewhere else, which they might not be. Interesting, though...
I think next spring we will have to get some chicks. Our hens are still laying, but they are old, so I know their time is about up. They are so good- I hate to think of 'replacing' them.

I spoke with Dr. Day. The medical info is outdated so he requested new info. I have passed that request on to the agency, but haven't heard back yet. Dr. Day wasn't very optimistic about this child's heart. Mostly based on his age and how long he has gone without another surgery. He said it can damage their lungs and lead to other complications. I'll let you know if we get some updated medical and what Dr. Day has to say about it.

PS, I like Circe's suggestion. After growing up in Hawaii, I'm pretty good at distinguishing the difference between Asian/Pacific Islander/Southeast Asians, but I have often been in a situation where I know people are wondering where my kids are from. It seems like a gentle way to start the conversation.

I appreciate that you are uncomfortable when people -- presumably adults -- ask Maylin where she is from. But they probably don't look like her, right? If Maylin sees someone that she thinks looks like her, I think it might be healthy to just help her have an appropriate conversation with the person.

Just be honest. Something like, I hope you don't mind, but my daughter thinks you might be born in the same country she was born in. Are you from China, by chance?

Did I just hear that?

Today I was at W*lM*rt and I had the WEIRDEST experience. I can't wait to hear what you all have to say about it. I was at the self check out and the worker that handles those came over to Nini and put her hands on Nini's cheeks and literally put her nose against Nini's nose. Okay....don't know you, plus it is serious cold and flu season. I pulled the cart back quickly. The lady was talking to Nini and asking her how old she was and telling her how cute she is (she is that). Then she said to me, "where did you get her from?" That question threw me. I have been asked where she is from, what nationality she is, but never, "where did you get her from?" I said China, but was thinking, "does she think I got her from a store or something?" This was just the beginning of what was the MOST outrageous conversation I have ever been apart of. She asked me her name. I told her and she said, "Thank you! It makes me so happy to hear that name."...

Maylin's room

Here is an update on painting. The doors continue to be a nightmare. We don''t have doors on the girls bathroom and no doorknobs on any of the other doors. Hopefully next week. I love everything else. Many of you asked about the glaze in the kitchen. It is an oil based glaze that comes in black, white, brown. You roll it on with a small roller and then take it off with a rag, by blotting it. You can make it darker or lighter depending on how much you put on and how much you take off. Here are pictures of Maylin's room. I was scared to make a change with 2 colors, but I think I like it. I don't know if you can tell but on the pink paint it is a wash (first white swirly, then pink) with light white flowers like the top pink ones. I picked words to go around her room that may inspire her. The Chinese translation is underneath. Of course, we used Meng, that was her first name...Meng ni and they called her Nini. The words are in vinyl and the flowers were painted using a pa...

Happily ever after

NieNie Dialogues: April 15, 2019 Christian is the most important person in Stephanie's life. She made this post about him. She wrote about how much she loved him and he loved her. Every year she dedicates a song to him as they enter another year as husband and wife. She said, "Everyday I pray to God, thanking him for Christian. I thank God that he is my husband, my protector, and greatest defender. I thank God that Christian loves and respects me.......And I thank God that I will be with Christian forever and even to infinity and beyond." I am not married, but I related to this post because I love my dad. He is my protector and my provider. He really takes care of our family. He is so great. I can tell my mom loves him too. Even though it embarrasses me, I love to watch my parents hug and kiss. I am glad we are sealed together. After reading this post, I decided I needed to write in my journal characteristics I want in a husband. These are the things I wrote: Must l...
