An essay by Austin

Austin read Silas Marner by George Eliot for school. Here are 4 paragraphs from his essay. I know his teacher will love this essay. The paragraphs don't follow each other as there are other paragraphs between them in his essay, but these were my favs. See why I love this boy!

Austin is discussing his favorite part of the book where Eppie's (an orphan girl)biological father and his wife come to Silas' home (the man who took her in and raised her) and tell Eppie that they are her real parents and try to get her to come live with them.

THE ESSAY:
This part of the book is essential to the theme of Silas Marner. Throughout the book, it builds upon the relationship of Silas and Eppie and the love that grows between them, and it finally pays off at the end when Eppie chooses to stay with Silas. I believe that the great lesson that can be learned from this specific part and throughout the book is love, and that love can be stronger than any biological relation. I have personal knowledge of this by having adopted my sister Maylin. I know I feel the same love for her that I feel for my biological siblings. When I read this book it really hit home to me and my family because that is what has happened with Maylin. Not only do we feel a great bond with her because of our love and our commitment to her, but because we have been sealed as a family in the temple. Our bond of love is stronger than a biological line.

If what happened in Silas Marner with Godfrey and Nancy coming for Eppie and wanting her back, and Eppie finding out that they are her biological parents, happened to Maylin; I hope that Maylin would stay with us. I really know she would, because she loves us and we are the only thing that she has ever known. She trusts us and depends on us for everything. This idea was confirmed to me when Eppie said, “I couldn’t give up the folks I’ve been used to.” What is so wonderful to me about this scene is that it can be related to anyone. Love can truly bond people together just like it did to Silas and Eppie in a way that they would not want to leave them for anyone else.

In The Family: A Proclamation to the World it states, “By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families.” Silas Marner did everything it states in the family proclamation. He presided over Eppie in love and righteousness and he provided protection and every other necessity of life. I believe the greatest example in history of this power that can seal a child to a father that is not biologically related, is in the story of Joseph and Jesus. Joseph raised Jesus, knowing he was not his own, but because of the commitment, love and the desire to raise this child in truth, they were sealed together as a family. Jesus’ earthly family was complete because Joseph was a good man like Silas and raised Jesus in pure love and with total commitment.

I personally have experienced the bond that comes from raising a family according to the proclamation. I personally have experienced the sealing power of the temple. I know Maylin is my sister. I had this testimony reconfirmed to me as I read Silas Marner and saw what I live, every day, in their story. I know that if we follow the guidelines of love and commitment we can have strong family relations even if we are not biologically related to a certain member of our family. The Lord binds those together who live in love.

Did I just hear that?

Today I was at W*lM*rt and I had the WEIRDEST experience. I can't wait to hear what you all have to say about it. I was at the self check out and the worker that handles those came over to Nini and put her hands on Nini's cheeks and literally put her nose against Nini's nose. Okay....don't know you, plus it is serious cold and flu season. I pulled the cart back quickly. The lady was talking to Nini and asking her how old she was and telling her how cute she is (she is that). Then she said to me, "where did you get her from?" That question threw me. I have been asked where she is from, what nationality she is, but never, "where did you get her from?" I said China, but was thinking, "does she think I got her from a store or something?" This was just the beginning of what was the MOST outrageous conversation I have ever been apart of. She asked me her name. I told her and she said, "Thank you! It makes me so happy to hear that name."...

Maylin's room

Here is an update on painting. The doors continue to be a nightmare. We don''t have doors on the girls bathroom and no doorknobs on any of the other doors. Hopefully next week. I love everything else. Many of you asked about the glaze in the kitchen. It is an oil based glaze that comes in black, white, brown. You roll it on with a small roller and then take it off with a rag, by blotting it. You can make it darker or lighter depending on how much you put on and how much you take off. Here are pictures of Maylin's room. I was scared to make a change with 2 colors, but I think I like it. I don't know if you can tell but on the pink paint it is a wash (first white swirly, then pink) with light white flowers like the top pink ones. I picked words to go around her room that may inspire her. The Chinese translation is underneath. Of course, we used Meng, that was her first name...Meng ni and they called her Nini. The words are in vinyl and the flowers were painted using a pa...

Happily ever after

NieNie Dialogues: April 15, 2019 Christian is the most important person in Stephanie's life. She made this post about him. She wrote about how much she loved him and he loved her. Every year she dedicates a song to him as they enter another year as husband and wife. She said, "Everyday I pray to God, thanking him for Christian. I thank God that he is my husband, my protector, and greatest defender. I thank God that Christian loves and respects me.......And I thank God that I will be with Christian forever and even to infinity and beyond." I am not married, but I related to this post because I love my dad. He is my protector and my provider. He really takes care of our family. He is so great. I can tell my mom loves him too. Even though it embarrasses me, I love to watch my parents hug and kiss. I am glad we are sealed together. After reading this post, I decided I needed to write in my journal characteristics I want in a husband. These are the things I wrote: Must l...
